Build a welcome sequence

A multi-step onboarding email flow that starts when someone signs up.

A sequence is a series of emails with delays between them, started by an event. A welcome sequence is the common first one: greet a new contact, then follow up over their first week or two.

Before you start

You need a verified sending domain and a way for your product or site to tell Pombo when someone signs up, either the events API or an AI agent posting the event.

1. Decide the trigger event

Pick the event name that means "a new person arrived", for example user.created or list.subscribed. Your backend posts it to /api/v1/events with the person's email. Unknown emails create the contact. Check Settings, Events to confirm the event is arriving.

2. Create the sequence

In Sequences, create one and set its trigger to that event name. See triggers and enrollment.

3. Draft the steps

Describe the flow you want and Pombo drafts it: an immediate welcome, a wait, a "here is what to try first" email, another wait, a check-in. Adjust the delays and rewrite any step. Each email can use its own template.

4. Set a goal

Give the sequence a goal, usually an event like subscription.created or onboarding.completed. Pombo measures conversions against it and stops emailing anyone who has already converted. See goals.

5. Simulate it

Run a simulation to walk a sample contact through every step and delay, so you can see the exact path before it is live.

6. Activate

Set the sequence to active, on the canvas or by asking a connected agent to do it. New contacts enroll the moment their event arrives. Watch the first few in the sequence's contact list.

What you have now

An onboarding flow that runs itself. The same event can also fire a transactional email; they run independently.
