Build a template

Assemble a reusable email from layouts, sections, and blocks.

Templates are the reusable designs behind campaigns, sequences, and transactional email. You build one out of blocks and then use it as many times as you like.

Before you start

Nothing. You can build a template on a brand-new account.

1. Start from a layout

Open Templates and create one. A layout sets the outer frame: width, background, header, and footer. Pick one now and every template that uses it stays consistent, and a change to the layout updates them all. See the template editor.

2. Add sections and columns

A section is a full-width horizontal band. Inside it, add one or more columns. Keep the structure shallow: a section with two columns is fine, a column inside a column inside a column will fight you later.

3. Drop in blocks

Add content blocks to the columns: text, image, button, divider, spacer. Set the styles you need on each one. The editor only exposes the style properties that render reliably across mail clients, so you cannot accidentally build something that breaks in Outlook.

4. Add merge tags

Use {{ first_name }} or any contact field in your copy, with a fallback like {{ first_name | default: "there" }}. Transactional templates can also use {{ event.* }} for event data. See merge tags.

5. Handle images

Upload images through the editor or generate one from a prompt. Pombo hosts it and gives you a URL. Do not paste data: URIs; many clients drop them. See images and assets.

6. Preview and save

Preview with real contact data to see merge tags resolved, and check the phone layout. Save when it looks right. Use Send test to put it in your own inbox.

What you have now

A reusable template. Point a campaign, a sequence, or a transactional email at it.
