Your Mailchimp account was set up years ago for the newsletter, and it still sends that newsletter fine. Now the product team wants a welcome sequence that starts when someone signs up, a nudge when they skip setup, and receipts from the same domain. Someone opens Mailchimp's automation builder, and someone else asks whether a lifecycle tool would be less work. This is the Pombo vs Mailchimp question, for a product team deciding which one should run that email.
Pombo vs Mailchimp: the short answer
In our view, the difference is the starting point: Mailchimp starts from the audience you write to, and Pombo starts from the events your product sends. If your email is mostly a newsletter and a few campaigns a person writes on a schedule, we would stay on Mailchimp. If your email should react to what people do in your product, and you would like an AI agent to do most of the setup, Pombo is built for that job.
The rest of this page goes through how each is built, what you pay for, how an AI agent fits in, and what a switch involves.
How each one handles lifecycle email
Mailchimp: automation flows
Mailchimp's automation builder was called Customer Journey Builder until June 2025, when it was renamed Marketing Automation Flows.[1] A flow starts from triggers and can filter who enters, with up to 5 filters per flow.[2] How much you can build depends on your plan: Essentials allows up to 4 steps in a flow, Standard and above allow up to 200,[2][2] and you need Standard or higher to add up to 3 triggers.[2]
The cases to look at closely are the ones that start in your product: a trial that started, a project that was never created, a plan that changed. Before you build those anywhere, check how the tool takes in events from your product and how quickly a flow can react to them.
Pombo: events from your backend start sequences
In Pombo, your product posts events to one endpoint, and sequences react to them. A sequence has waits, branches and goals, and a goal ends the journey early once the person converts, so nobody gets a "finish setting up" email after they have finished. Audience segments are dynamic rather than lists you maintain by hand. One event can start a sequence, send a transactional email and count as a goal at the same time (how events work).
If you have not wired events before, which product events to track is a good starting list.
A worked example: the trial nudge
Say you want to email anyone who starts a trial but has not created a project two days later. In Pombo, your backend posts the start of the trial:
curl -X POST https://flypombo.com/api/v1/events \
-H "Authorization: Bearer pombo_..." \
-H "Content-Type: application/json" \
-d '{"event": "trial.started", "email": "[email protected]", "properties": {"plan": "pro"}}'
A 202 means the event was recorded, and an email Pombo has not seen before creates the contact. A sequence triggered by trial.started waits two days, then sends the nudge, with a goal on project.created so anyone who creates a project leaves the journey before the email goes. The plan arrives in the email as {{ event.plan }}. Settings, Events shows each event as it arrives, so you can confirm your backend is posting what it should. You can run the sequence in simulation against your real contacts before it goes live.
Feature by feature
| Mailchimp | Pombo | |
|---|---|---|
| Starts from | Triggers, with up to 3 on Standard or higher[2] | Events your product posts |
| Steps per automation | Up to 4 on Essentials, up to 200 on Standard[2][2] | Multi-step sequences with waits, branches and goals |
| Who enters | Up to 5 filters per flow[2] | Dynamic segments |
| Transactional email | Paid add-on on Standard or Premium[3] | Same platform |
| AI agent | Connector plans and designs campaigns[4] | Agent can set up nearly everything over MCP |
Pricing: what you pay for
Mailchimp's marketing plan price increases with your contact total,[5] and subscribed, unsubscribed and non-subscribed contacts all count toward that total.[5] Transactional email is separate: it is a paid add-on to a Standard or Premium marketing plan,[3] bought as blocks of credits at a recurring monthly rate.[3] So a product team sending receipts and lifecycle email from Mailchimp pays for two things, and for every contact in the audience whether or not they still get marketing.
Pombo runs transactional and marketing email on the same platform. It has a free plan with no time limit and no card required, and the current plans are on the pricing page.
How an AI agent fits in
This is where the two differ most. Mailchimp's marketing connector for AI assistants plans and designs campaigns and saves them to your account,[4] but it has no tools for sending, audiences or reporting.[4] The agent can write the email; a person builds the rest.
Pombo exposes everything in the app to an AI agent over MCP: contacts, segments, templates, sequences, brand voice, images, analytics and setup. From an MCP client such as Claude or Cursor (connecting an agent), you can ask for the trial nudge above and get the sequence built and validated, in draft. The one thing an agent cannot do is send or schedule a campaign; that stays a click in Pombo, and unsubscribes are honoured whatever the agent asks. The full list is on what an agent can do, and running email from Claude Code shows it end to end.
When Mailchimp is the better pick
- Your email is a newsletter. A person writes it, it goes to everyone, and nothing depends on product events.
- Your team already lives in Mailchimp and the flows you need fit its limits on your plan.
One more case where Pombo is not the right fit: if you need SMS or push alongside email in the same journeys, those are not available in Pombo sequences yet, so look for a tool that offers them.

What switching from Mailchimp involves
A switch does not have to be a weekend project. An AI agent connected to Pombo can do the move in a set order: create your custom fields first, import contacts, import your unsubscribed, bounced and complained contacts with those statuses, bring templates across with Mailchimp's |FNAME| merge tags rewritten to Pombo's {{ first_name }} style, and rebuild your flows as sequences left in draft. The statuses carry over the way they should: unsubscribed contacts get no marketing but still get receipts, and bounced or complained addresses get nothing at all (how suppression works). Nothing sends during the migration. While your account is reviewed for sending, you can still build sequences, import contacts and design templates.
The step-by-step version, including what to export from Mailchimp, is in how to migrate off Mailchimp without breaking your list.
Try it on one sequence first
You do not have to move everything at once. Start free with no card, post one event from your product, and build the welcome sequence in Pombo while the newsletter stays where it is. If it works for you, move the rest.
Frequently asked questions
What is the main difference between Pombo and Mailchimp?
Mailchimp starts from an audience you write to; Pombo starts from events your product sends, which start sequences with waits, branches and goals. For a newsletter, Mailchimp is a mature choice. For product-driven lifecycle email, Pombo is built for the job.
Does Mailchimp include transactional email?
Not in the base plan. You add Mailchimp Transactional on top of a Standard or Premium plan and pay for it in monthly blocks of credits. Pombo runs transactional and marketing email on the same platform.
Can an AI agent run Mailchimp or Pombo?
Mailchimp's connector plans and designs campaigns but has no sending, audience or reporting tools. In Pombo an AI agent can set up contacts, segments, templates and sequences over MCP; sending a campaign stays a click in Pombo.
How hard is it to switch from Mailchimp to Pombo?
An AI agent can move custom fields, contacts, unsubscribe and bounce statuses, and templates, and rebuild flows as draft sequences. Nothing sends during the migration.
